ABOUT FARMER TO FARMER COFFEE
THE PEOPLE
Farmer to Farmer coffee is grown in Guatemala by Mayan family farmers. By forging new relationships and marketing opportunities, these innovative farmers are able to improve their lives. They are proud to educate their children, support their communities and maintain the dignity of their ancestral traditions.
Farmer to Farmer pays at or above “fair trade” prices to contribute to the efforts of local people to build a diverse and sustainable economy. Farmer to Farmer coffee is grown around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
THE COOPERATIVE
The processing cooperative in San Lucas Toliman was started by Father Greg Schafer in 1992 to help Mayan farmers receive a consistent, just price for their coffee. Fr. Greg has worked with the Mayan community of Lake Atitlan for over 40 years.
The cooperative closely monitors the quality of the beans to ensure the finest coffee. Today there are over 300 families selling their coffee to the cooperative. To learn more visit: www.sanlucasmission.com
THE BEANS
Farmer to Farmer coffee is grown with care in the highlands around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Deep volcanic soil, warm days and cool nights provide ideal conditions for Mayan farmers to cultivate and harvest some of the world’s best Arabica coffee.
THE EARTH
While ethical trading practices and great taste are both important as you choose a cup of coffee, many people are also concerned about the impact of their purchase on the environment.
Farmer to Farmer coffee is shade-grown. The coffee plants grow beneath the forest canopy, and farmers plant more trees as they expand production. Because the farmers are creating natural and healthy growing conditions for the coffee plants, the need for pesticides and herbicides is reduced or eliminated.
VISION
Twenty years ago, a rural west-central Wisconsin community came together with a passion for peace and justice. Our search for cultural understanding led us to rich and lasting friendships in Guatemala. Our work in Wisconsin and Guatemala is based on the belief that the backbone of an equitable society lies in healthy and sustainable rural communities, and that all people have the right to live free of poverty and oppression.
