Don Arnulfo

Don Arnulfo
El Sute

Don Arnulfo and his family live in the village of El Sute, high on the southeast side of the Comayagua Mountain Range. To visit his farm we took a four-wheel drive truck four hours up mountain roads to stay at his brother Don Chico's house. From there we walked an hour up steep muddy paths to Don Chico's coffee plot and when we were there we were informed that Don Arnulfo was expecting us at his house which was "just a little further." Many turned back, but Sue Gerlach and I did not.

As we walked down a steep muddy road on the other side of the ridge, I wondered just how far we were heading. Every step down was another step that we would have to walk back up. But this time, Arnulfo's house was blissfully close. We were invited to have the most delicious coffee of our trip on his porch. After a while we drifted into the kitchen, where his wife was making tortillas and their pet parrot was walking around, adorably attached to the humans of the house. With the smiles and gentle conversation, we could tell we were in a house of love.

Don Arnulfo's coffee reflects that level of care. We saw the coffee drying in the drying shed and the beans were big and uniform. The leaves of the coffee plants, which were right outside the window, were dark green and glossy. Don Arnulfo’s coffee consistently scores amongst the highest.
