Farmer Spotlight
Mary Luz Lucas
Mary Luz lives high in the mountains near the small town of La Democracia, Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
Mary Luz has been a member of the women’s coffee group since it was founded, ten years ago. She is 42 years old and a mother of four. When she was a child, her parents grew some coffee but not on the scale she does now. Her oldest son, Roldan, and her husband, Matalio, have been living abroad for four years. She hopes they will come home soon. She runs her coffee farm, and she takes care of her younger children ages four, six, and ten.
Mary Luz grows 4.1 acres of coffee of which 1.3 is organic. She is working to increase the percentage of her fields to organic, but says that that’s a lot of work! Coffee farming is her only income, and she is hopeful right now as the crop this year looks good! They have had a good rain. Maria Luz says, “Thanks for buying my coffee. I am happy to work with you!”
